RICHARD NOYCE: BRIEF CV

Richard Noyce has in the past twenty years been primarily a writer on the visual arts for magazines in Britain and Europe, although he has also produced and exhibited drawings, photographs, paintings, and latterly digital prints. Having worked for many years in gallery and arts administration he has gained a broad experience of many aspects of the arts world, in Britain and Europe.

With a strong connection with the Polish art scene he has written two major books on contemporary Polish art (‘Contemporary Painting in Poland, 1995, awarded the 1996 AAASS/Orbis Polish Book Prize, and ‘Contemporary Graphic Art in Poland, 1997). In 2003 he was elected President of the Awards Jury for the Krakow International Print Triennale. This honour was accorded to him again for the 40th anniversary Krakow International Print Triennale in 2006.

He was a keynote speaker at IMPACT 4 in Poznan/Berlin in September 2005, and at the European art studies conference, ‘Between a Method and a Fancy’ at the Fine Arts Academy in Vilnius, Lithuania, in April 2005.

His latest book ('Printmaking at the Edge', A&C Black, London 2006, ISBN 0-7136-6784-2) explores the work of 45 innovative print artists from 16 countries. During the research for this book he presented lectures at art academies in Kansas City and Vancouver. This book has generated ‘Further’, a portfolio project with work from a large number of the artists in the book, and with an invited print from Richard Noyce. Exhibitions of the portfolio of prints have taken place at a growing number of international locations, including Winston/Salem, (North Carolina) Kansas City (Missouri), Kaunas (Lithuania), Jyväskylä (Finland), Kasterlee (Belgium) and Falun (Sweden), with projects being developed for further exhibitions in Austria, and the USA.

He wrote the introductory article for the 2006 ‘Grapheion’ yearbook, published in Prague in 2007. He also participated in two panels at the Southern Graphics Council Conference in Kansas City in spring 2007, in conjunction with which the exhibition, ‘Prints of Wales’, featuring the work of 11 contemporary Welsh printmakers, curated by Richard Noyce, will be shown at the Belger Arts Center in Kansas City.

‘Printmaking at the Edge’ also formed the basis for the Falun Print Triennale in August 2007, at which nearly all the artists featured in the book will exhibit new work at the Dalarnas Museum and at other locations in the town. A major exhibition of a selection of artists from the book was held at the prestigioud Grafikens Hus in Mariefred, Sweden in Autumn/Winter 2007.

In summer 2007 Richard Noyce was a jury member for the Wrexham (North Wales) International Biennale and i September 2007, he participated in the Symposium held in conjunction with the major exhibition of prints from the Krakow Print Triennale at the Künstlerhaus in Vienna. In October 2007 he was a member of the jury for the Prague Graphic Triennale and later that month chaired a panel for the IMPACT 5 conference in Tallinn, Estonia.

In November 2007 he lectured in Seoul, South Korea, in conjunction with a showing of the 'Further' portfolio exhibition at the Hanmi Photography Museum.

He is currently working on the research for the follow up to 'Printmaking at the Edge'. This new book, scheduled for publication in late 2010, will be called 'Printmaking Beyond the Edge', and will take further the exploration of new develoments in international printmaking.
